Gynecologic cancers — including cervical, endometrial, ovarian, vulvar, and vaginal cancers — are among the most common cancers in Indian women. Types of Gynecologic Cancers

• Cervical Cancer: Most common gynaecologic cancer in India; caused by HPV in the majority of cases. Highly curable with chemoradiation and HDR brachytherapy even in locally advanced stages.
• Endometrial (Uterine) Cancer: Post-hysterectomy vaginal vault brachytherapy significantly reduces vaginal recurrence.
• Ovarian Cancer: Radiation is used selectively for isolated recurrences and palliative symptoms.
• Vaginal Cancer: Treated definitively with EBRT combined with brachytherapy boost.
• Vulvar Cancer: Post-operative radiation or definitive chemoradiation for locally advanced cases.

Warning Signs

• Abnormal vaginal bleeding — between periods, after menopause, or after intercourse
• Unusual vaginal discharge with blood, odour, or unusual colour
• Pelvic pain or pressure unrelated to menstruation
• Pain during sexual intercourse
• Frequent urination, blood in urine, or difficulty urinating
• Swelling or bloating in the abdomen (ovarian cancer)
• Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss

What Is HDR Brachytherapy?

High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy involves placing small applicators directly into the uterus and vagina, then delivering high-dose radiation from inside the body right at the source of the cancer. This achieves an extremely high dose to the tumour while the rapid dose fall-off protects the bladder, rectum, and bowel. Post-Hysterectomy Radiation for Endometrial Cancer

For intermediate and high-risk endometrial cancer after hysterectomy, vaginal vault brachytherapy (3 sessions over 2 weeks) dramatically reduces the risk of vaginal recurrence with minimal side effects.
